Summer time – the weather’s fine, and the kids are home from school. This is usually a great time to go away for any desired amount of time; whether that means a week or the entire summer. However, when you’re away, your home needs to be maintained so you don’t return to a disaster. Below are some tips on how to maintain and protect your home while you’re away on summer vacation, so that your only worries are putting on sunscreen and choosing what book to read on the beach!
Home Security
There are many home security systems to choose from, so depending on how intense you want the home monitoring system to be, the right one is out there for you. You can go as far as watching a live feed of your home from your phone, or as basic as installing a home security system that alerts you if someone tries to break in.
Give Friends/Family Access
Give a trusted friend or family member access to your home while you’re gone so they can bring in packages, water plants and do other maintenance duties you just can’t do when you’re not there. By having someone stop by once a week or so, you will have peace of mind knowing your home isn’t left abandoned.
Keep Regularly Scheduled Maintenance Visits
Regularly scheduled maintenance visits like pool cleanings and landscaping should resume while you’re gone so that your home is being correctly taken care of, even if you’re not there. If you skip these maintenance visits, you might come home to an overgrown lawn and a filthy pool and it will be double the work to fix it.
Avoid Mailbox Overflow
To avoid your mailbox being overflowed with mail, there a few options you can take. You can have your trusted friend or family member pick up the mail, have your mail temporarily stopped while you’re gone, or have it forwarded to your summer location during the time you’re away.
Sensor Lights
Just like a home security system, having sensor lights will give you peace of mind while your home is being left unoccupied. The sensor lights will turn on when it picks up motion, so it might scare a potential robber away when they turn on, thinking someone is home. A sensor light will become useful to you even when you are home, so it’s a good investment to have for all-year-round.
Keep Valuables in a Safe
The valuables that you don’t take with you should be locked up in a safe while you’re gone. If in the event a robber does break into your house, you don’t want to give them easy access to your valuables.
