Once the cold weather fades away, the snow is melted and the flowers start blooming, it’s time for spring cleaning. While you’re at it, consider giving your home a quick inspection to make sure all its parts are operating correctly. Use this maintenance checklist to ensure your home’s systems are running safely and smoothly for your family. These tasks won’t take up too much of your time, but can prevent future headaches when finding out something needs to be fixed too late.
Roof Inspection
Have your roof inspected for any loose shingles or any other damage caused by winter snowstorms before spring’s rainy days begin. Any shingles that are cracked, loose, damaged or missing need to be replaced as soon as possible. If your roof is old, consider making room in your budget to replace it in its entirety.
Check Foundation for Cracks
Give the exterior of your home a walk through and check for cracks or damage to the foundation to keep water from leaking into the house. If damage is found, the cracks need to be sealed with crack filler or silicone caulk. When sealed, power wash and finish by sealing the concrete one last time.
Clean Out the Gutters
Debris will start to build up over the winter months, so spring is time to clear it all out. If anything hinders drainage, leaks can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Once the gutters are cleared, make sure the downspouts drain away from the foundation.
A/C Maintenance
Calling a professional to check your A/C systems once a year will help keep your energy bills low by ensuring the system is running properly. Make sure outside units are clean and the condensate drain hose isn’t blocked.
Check for Water Heater Leakage
If your water heater is over five years old, it’s important to check for rust around the base of the unit. If you find any leakage or rust, it’s time to get the unit replaced. Also, make sure the circulating pump and motor is lubricated.
