How to Prepare for a Home Renovation in Long Beach

Once a home remodel is planned, it’s a thrilling time full of excitement and promise. Keep in mind that depending on the size of the remodeling project, you will have to put in various levels of effort to clear the space so that it’s ready for work to be done.

There are some home renovation projects that will require you to briefly move out, and there are many that you will continue to live in the house for. Either way, preparing your home for a renovation is key to a smooth experience. Here are our tips for preparing your home for a home remodel, which includes mentally preparing.

Pack Up Adjacent Rooms

Not only is it a good idea to pack up the rooms that are getting remodeled but packing up the adjacent rooms is a good idea as well. Protecting all your belongings is top priority during a home remodel. For example, not only will you need to pack up the kitchen for a kitchen remodel, but you might also want to pack up the adjacent dining room, down to removing the curtains so that they don’t get full of dust and debris.

Clean and Declutter

Now is the time to clean and declutter. When remodeling certain rooms or the entire house, everything needs to be out of the way. Take everything out of cabinets, countertops, and shelves. If your flooring is being replaced, the entire house needs to be prepped for the renovation. Now is a good time to get rid of or donate anything you no longer need.

Prepare for Noise

It will be noisy in the house during a home renovation, that is a guarantee. Mentally preparing, in addition to planning your day-to-day activities out of the house, can help manage your expectations of a noisy remodel. If you work outside of the home for the majority of the day, it won’t be an issue. If you work from home, it might be a good idea to find a temporary office during the duration of the remodel.

Staying or Going?

Decide if you’re staying or going during the home remodeling process. You will have to prep the house either way but making this decision will help establish a plan if you do decide to stay. There will need to be a designated space for kids and a temporary kitchen if a kitchen remodel is underway.

Embrace the Chaos

Embrace the chaos of a renovation, it is a temporary interruption with the end result being worth it ten times over. Keep an open line of communication with your contractors so that everyone’s on the same page, especially when deciding to stay in the house during the renovation.
