Home Tips for Looking Professional on Video Conferences

Many of us are working from home as we do our part to stop the spread of the Coronavirus, which means we not only have to keep up our personal appearances as we video conference from home but our home must look presentable as well.

Home has now become a multi-functional space that can easily get cluttered. Our four walls are now our office, gym, daycare, school and more. With that said, it can be difficult to look professional on screen with piles of laundry, the kids’ homework and our pets in the background causing a ruckus. Below are some tips to make yourself look professional as you video conference at home during this unprecedented time in quarantine.

Neutral Background

Strive for a nice, neutral background in video conferences, making sure there’s nothing distracting in the way that can take the focus off of your conversation. Find a corner of the house with neutral walls, but not too bare or it will look sterile. Place a plant or a painting in the background to liven up the space.

Lighting

Lighting is important in a video conference. Natural light is the best type of lighting, but a desk or floor lamp will light up the screen too. The people you’re video conferencing with need to see you clearly, and sitting in a dark, dingy basement can be distracting and unprofessional.

Declutter

The space around you needs to be free of clutter. Piles of laundry, stacks of paper or a messy bookshelf need to be tidied up in order for you to put your best professional foot forward.

Private, Quiet Place

The area in which you video conference can’t be loud and boisterous. It needs to be a private, quiet place where you can focus on the tasks at hand. This might mean stepping away from the kids or any other distractions during the duration of the call.

Be Wary of the Door

No one wants to see your family burst through the door behind you during a video conference. Be wary of sitting in an area with the door behind you. Reposition yourself so that the background is free from the possibility of guest appearances.
