Punch list completion should be contractually tied to final payment. Do not release the final payment until all items are confirmed resolved. The contract should specify how punch list completion is documented and verified. If items remain open and the contractor is unresponsive, you have a documented list of outstanding obligations that supports any necessary dispute resolution, which is precisely why the list must be written, not verbal.

The punch list is created jointly during a formal walk-through with the project manager and homeowner, both reviewing the space systematically room by room. Homeowners should participate actively in this walk-through, raising every concern no matter how minor. The walk-through should be scheduled when the project is substantially complete, all major work finished, fixtures installed, finishes applied, not while significant work is still in progress.
