Get your Oyster Bay Home Garden Ready for Spring

One of the most exciting aspects of springtime is being able to see our home gardens back in bloom. Now that we’re on the cusp of putting the dark, cold days of winter behind us and we can finally look ahead to sunny spring days, we can start planning and putting some work into the home garden. Even if it feels too soon to start spring gardening again, there are still plenty of things to do to prep the garden before gardening season is officially underway. Below are some tips to get your spring garden in great shape for this spring.

Weed

Weeding can be done at any time and it’s never too early to start. As soon as weeds start to appear, clear them out. The best time to weed, especially if there’s a lot of weeding to do, is after rain because of soil softens, which provides easy access for the weeds to come out.

Fertilize

Plants need to eat and be nourished just like we do. At the first signs of growth, start fertilizing your home garden to see optimal results over the duration of gardening season. Buy fertilizer in bulk and sprinkle some around the base of your plants before raking or scratching it into the soil with your hands.

Clear Debris

Start clearing out any debris that might’ve been left behind during storms this past fall and winter. It’s never too early to start doing this step either, since your spring bulbs could be blooming any day now and your garden beds should be prepped and ready for new plants to arrive without any damage.

Clean/Sharpen Tools

Your garden tools like shears and shovels are your best friend during the spring, so make sure they’re in good shape to do some work on your home garden this season. Pull those tools out of storage and clean them with soap and water, then do your best to sharpen them for the best gardening results.

Divide Perennials

Before plants start to grow, divide your perennials to ensure they’re as healthy as ever. When perennials are overcrowded, they produce less flowers than perennials that have been strategically divided with enough space in between.

Start Seeds Indoors

If you want to get a head start on spring gardening season, or you’re just antsy and excited to see your bulbs and plants in bloom, get started by growing them indoors. When the time is right, you can plant your plants directly in the ground.
