Childproofing Your Home

Ways to Childproof Your Home:

Children are known for being very curious beings when they are at a young age. The minute a child begins to crawl is the minute parents begin to worry. All it takes is that one split second of turning your attention elsewhere, and before you know it, your inquisitive little youngster has gone someplace they shouldn’t have gone, or touched something they shouldn’t have touched. As a parent, it is your duty to keep your little ones safe, and the best place to start, is with childproofing your home.

Home safety is extremely important, and prevention is always the best way to keep your children safe. The kitchen is a place with many hazardous areas where adults even find themselves sustaining injuries, so if you can’t keep your children out of the kitchen altogether then the next best thing is to childproof it. Make sure all cabinets and drawers containing cutlery, utensils, scissors and other sharp items have a childproof latch on them. Also, be sure to latch your cabinets that contain your kitchen cleaning supplies and any other liquids that may be poisonous if consumed. Stove locks should also be placed on the oven, and when you’re cooking, it’s a smart idea to use the back burners and turn any pot handles out of reach of children. Make sure that all plastic bags are stored in a safe place inaccessible to children, and be sure to unplug all appliances when they’re not in use.

The bathroom is another great place to start when childproofing your home. Like the kitchen cabinets, the bathroom cabinets should also have childproof locks placed on them. All of your medications and other potentially harmful drugs should have a childproof cap on them and also be placed in the locked cabinets. Other items that should not be exposed are razor blades, cleaners, mouthwash, toothpaste, hairspray, nail polish remover, and other items of that nature. Unplug all hairdryers, curling irons, and straighteners when done with use and store them away. Having ground fault circuit interrupters on the outlets are a major home safety must have, as it will protect against electrocution.

Other ways to childproof your home would be using baby gates around your home in areas such as the top of the staircase, and in front of doorways that can lead to a hazardous room. Doorknob covers are an alternative way to keep children out of rooms you don’t want them going into. Use cushioned corner guards on all sharp-cornered furniture to prevent any dangerous collisions. Invest in cordless blinds, as those with cords are potential strangling hazards. Secure bookcases, entertainment centers, and shelves, to prevent anything from possibly falling over. All of these things provide at home safety for your children and leave you with less worry.
